Your privacy while using the California Digital Library's (CDL) Melvyl® Union Catalog is an important element of your intellectual and academic freedom. CDL is supported in protecting your privacy by national and state-level laws as well as through University of California and campus policies.

Information Collected and Stored Automatically
We gather and store certain information about the users of Melvyl in order to better understand and meet the needs of our users, diagnose problems with our server, administer our website, etc. This information does not identify you personally.

User data collected automatically includes:

  • The IP address from which you access our website
  • The name of the domain from which you access the Internet, e.g., AOL.com, Berkeley.edu, etc.
  • The type of browser and operating system used to access our website
  • The date and time you access our site
  • The Internet address of the website from which you linked to our website.

The session logs that contain this data are retained unaltered for 1-2 weeks. After this time, the logs are "anonymized" (IP addresses are replaced with general domain names, e.g., UCLA.edu, which are retained for demographic purposes). The anonymized data is kept for a period of 1-2 years depending on space storage constraints after which time it is deleted from the system.

Links to other sites
Melvyl links out to other sites and services that are not controlled by the California Digital Library. Where the CDL licenses with vendors for digital information resources, every attempt is made to include user information protection in the license agreement. However, you must read the privacy statements at these external sites to learn of their privacy policies.

Site Security
To guard against unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and promote the correct use of information, we have implemented physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

However, while we consider these measures reasonable, no guarantee can be given that they will always and in all cases prevent or protect against invalid access or improper activity. For this reason, we avoid keeping information beyond the term of its primary use and where possible encrypt or delete data elements that might cause activities to be linked to individual users.

3rd Party Enhancements
CDL believes the inclusion of links and services from third parties, such as links to Google Books, provide significant benefit to our users. Because a user's browser interacts with these services directly, they need access to both your IP address and the Book or Item you've requested. If you are concerned about sharing this information with any 3rd party services, you may disable this feature using the links below.
